Hey
Does anyone know of a good lord of the rings game?

Post 2 by Abbyforth (Veteran Zoner) on Monday, 13-Sep-2010 16:52:23

I'm looking for the same thing!
I haven't found anything. I've looked at LOTRO, but I don't think that is accessible. I haven't really checked out anything else, but would love to know about any LotR games that might be accessible!
Oh, I also checked out the facebook game, the one ring, but that isn't accessible at all!

I thought there was a Hobbit (maybe even a Lord of the Rings game) at the Interactive Fiction Archive. It sounds like something Infocom might have done but I don't think this one was from them. But I've definitely heard of something along those lines.

There was a tiny hobbit game in the if archive, but it was really short and ran in dos. There were only like 10 moves or something.

Awe, I thought it was a full game! That sucks. Guess I've got to look again...

I don't know how to use the IF archive, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a LotR game, I'd really be greatful!

I played around with the If-Archive, and although the site is massive, it's not impossible to navigate. You just need to know what you want and where to find it. I went to games, then figured I'd try the PC ones so went there and then took that page, pasted it into Wordpad and searched for things like Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Ring, Tolkien etc. but came up with nothing. But there's a whole list of platforms so they may still have something. The important thing is to find the right interpretor once you find a game or it may not work.

I then did a Google search for Lord of the Rings text adventure and found an absolutely huge site all about text adventures, with links to just about everything you can imagine, from history to games to interpretors.

http://pdd.if-legends.org

Anyway, at this page, I read the following. Both links still work. I just downloaded the files to try them. Look for "Early Beam adventures" and The Tolkien Trilogy (Spectrum) on the above site. I haven't found an interpretor but I'm sure the If-Archive has them. The only thing is that I on't know if it's accessible or not. So here are the descriptions.

"Early Beam adventures (Spectrum)
The two earliest Beam adventures, The Hobbit (the first, rather buggy release) and Sherlock. (These are TAP files of the Sinclair Spectrum versions, so you'll need to find a Speccy emulator that handles TAP files.)"

"The Tolkien Trilogy (Spectrum)
This was a budget re-release of Beam's first 3 Tolkien adventures: Hobbit (bug-fixed version), Lord of the Rings a.k.a. Fellowship of the Ring, Shadows of Mordor. (Available as TAP files.)"

I hope that helps. If not, let me know and I'll do some more searching.

I wish LotRo was accessible!
Any new games for this category anybody?

I don't think it's really LotR based, but it is based on norse mythology. It's a mud, so you'll need a client. It's at http://www.valhalah.com. I hope this helps.

Post 14 by Abbyforth (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 17-Jan-2012 22:20:52

Oh sounds cool!
I'll check it out!

How about checking out The Mud Connector website and seeing about some LotR MUDs there? They have tons of MUDs and MUCKS and the like so may be able to find one that is semi active at least.

Well, didn't think about that. If you don't have a client, try mushclient. It's awesome! Oh, I have a typo in the address. It's actually http://www.valhalla.com.

Post 17 by Abbyforth (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2012 21:05:34

thanks, is mushclient free?

Post 18 by blindbat84 (Generic Zoner) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2012 21:45:27

Yup, Mush client is free and if you go to the alter Aeon site www.alteraeon.com I think, and go to the blind gamers FAQ there will be Mush listed there, it is set up with files for Alter, but it has the Mushreader.xml file to use with your SR and stuff so you don't have to hunt it down.

Post 19 by Abbyforth (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 18-Jan-2012 23:40:53

thanks!

Post 20 by blindncool (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 20-Jan-2012 17:05:25

Well, mushclient is totally absolutely free! I use Mush-Z, a modified version of mushclient with plugins already installed. It's at the alteraeon blind player support page.
